“Juanas” of 2ID attend GAD Summit 2016
A total of fifty-eight (58) “Juanas” composed of female Officers, Enlisted Personnel, and Civilian Employees of 2nd Infantry (Jungle Fighter) Division attended the Gender and Development (GAD) Summit 2016 held at Martessem Splendor in the Sky Hotel, Brgy. Sampaloc, Tanay, Rizal on March 8-9, 2016.
Said activity aimed to capacitate and empower women by giving them equal opportunity in governance and decision-making, and in strengthening their capabilities and skills in achieving their goals.
The GAD Summit 2016 is a two (2) – day activity which was facilitated by the Division Gender and Development Office headed by Cpt Ann Jay Lei A Merzo (SC) PA, Chief, GADO, in celebration of the International Women’s Month and National Women’s Day, which is anchored on the theme: “Kapakanan ni Juana, Isama sa Agenda.”
On the first day, an Opening Ceremony was conducted with BGen Rodel Mauro R Alarcon AFP, Assistant Division Commander, 2ID as the Keynote Speaker who was duly represented by LTC Divino Ariel S Mabagos GSC (INF) PA, Assistant Chief of Staff for Personnel, G1.
This was followed by a lecture on Gender and Development, Gender – Based Violence Referral System, and Differences of Male and Female by Dra. Herminigilda Cabanting PhD., Head, MDSWD-Tanay, and an open forum to discuss gender-based issues in the Military and the process to address such issues with LTC Allan L Tiu JAGS (PA), Chief, Office of the Division Staff Judge Advocate, 2ID, and representatives from Division Provost Marshall (DPM) and Office of the Ethical Standards and Public Accountability (OESPA), 2ID and representatives from Municipal Police Station (MPS) – Tanay.
In the evening, a fellowship cocktail was held to give all the participants a taste of respite.
On the last day, a lecture and an open forum about Women’s Health Awareness which was focused on Breast Cancer Awareness and Family Planning Methods was conducted by Dra. Marie De Jesus, General Obstetrician of Queen Mary Hospital based in Cardona, Rizal.
The said summit ended with a Closing Ceremony at around 3:00 PM with MGen Romeo G Gan AFP, Commander, 2ID who was duly represented by Col Lenard T Agustin GSC (INF) PA, Chief of Staff, 2ID.
On his message, he gave an assurance to every Juana. “Be assured that your voices will be heard, your concerns and needs will be addressed: not overlooked nor ignored,” he said.
More so, he stressed that with the successful conduct of the said activity, he have high hopes that all Juanas are now more inspired to achieve their maximum potential, especially in the attainment of all their goals, and in the performance of their respective duties and responsibilities.
The said summit is just one among the various programs of 2ID in support to the advocacy of Higher Headquarters to promote gender sensitivity and equality.
